The operation of depositing candidatures for the national legislative elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has recently been completed. In the province of Kwango, located in the west of the country, this process recorded an encouraging participation, with a total number of 412 files submitted. However, it is important to point out that the representation of women remains low, with only 42 candidates out of the 412 declarations.
Didas Niau Niau, provincial executive secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) of Kwango, noted a significant increase in the number of candidacies compared to previous elections. Indeed, in 2018, the province had registered 326 candidates, while in 2023, this figure rose to 412. Despite this progress, the under-representation of women remains a challenge.
The province of Kwango has 13 seats for the national deputation. In 2011, this number was 13, then decreased to 12 in 2018, finally falling back to 13 in 2023. It is therefore crucial to ensure fair representation for all, in order to promote gender equality in the political sphere.
The registration of candidates for legislative elections is an essential step in democracy in the DRC. It is an opportunity for citizens to choose their representatives and to participate actively in the political life of the country. Legislative elections also make it possible to renew institutions and guarantee democratic governance.
It is also important to underline that the participation of women in politics is a major issue. Promoting the equal participation of women in electoral processes contributes to a more diverse representation and to the consideration of the needs and perspectives of all stakeholders in society.
In conclusion, despite encouraging participation in the legislative elections in Kwango province, the under-representation of women remains a challenge. Promoting equal participation of women in political life is essential to ensure diverse and inclusive representation for all citizens of the DRC
