Recent news from the province of Ituri in the Democratic Republic of Congo shows us a worrying humanitarian situation. According to a report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the province is facing an increase in cases of measles and plague, as well as insecurity problems which are hampering public health interventions. .
Regarding measles, provincial health authorities are reporting a significant increase in suspected cases. Between July 3 and July 9, more than 380 cases, including nine deaths, were recorded, an increase of about 31% compared to the previous week. The situation is particularly worrying in the health zones of Nia-Nia, Mandima, Komanda and Nizi, which are currently in the midst of an epidemic. Response measures are being put in place with the support of partners such as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), UNICEF and Save the Children International. However, it is important to note that other health zones are in lack of response, which requires urgent intervention.
Regarding the plague, five suspected cases have been identified, including two deaths, in the health zone of Rethy. Lethality is estimated at 40%. As of July 9, this area had registered more than 60 cases and 10 deaths, which represents an increase compared to the same period of the previous year. Unfortunately, the security situation in this area remains worrying, thus limiting public health interventions.
Faced with this situation, humanitarian partners are stepping up their efforts to reach the most vulnerable populations. More than 53,000 people benefit from free primary health care in the territories of Mahagi and Mambasa. However, access to affected populations remains limited due to the prevailing insecurity and violence in the region.
It is crucial to take quick and effective measures to stem the spread of these diseases and improve the humanitarian situation in Ituri province. This requires close coordination between health authorities, humanitarian partners and local actors. It is also important to invest in sensitizing and educating the population on good health practices and improving access to quality health care.
The current situation in Ituri highlights the importance of international cooperation and concrete actions to support populations affected by humanitarian crises. There is a need to raise public awareness and mobilize resources to help the most vulnerable people. By working together, we can help improve the situation and build a better future for the province of Ituri and its people
