Justin Bitakwira and his inflammatory remarks: unanimous national and international condemnations

Title: Justin Bitakwira and his controversial remarks: unanimous condemnation

Introduction :

In a recent event that sparked controversy on the Congolese political scene, Justin Bitakwira, a politician from South Kivu, made shocking remarks against the Banyamulenge Tutsi community and the Bashi. These declarations quickly caused a reaction, both nationally and internationally, and led to a series of condemnations.

Incendiary statements:

During an interview granted to a media, Justin Bitakwira launched severe and unfounded attacks against the Tutsi Banyamulenge community. He accused them of being responsible for the conflict situation in the region and of working with “invaders”. Moreover, he also implicated the Bashi, accusing them of complicity with these so-called “invaders”.

Court reaction:

Faced with these extremist remarks, Justin Bitakwira was summoned to the prosecution near the Court of Cassation. However, during his hearing, he refused to answer the questions of the investigating magistrates until they had read the book “Holocaust in Congo” by Charles Onana, which he claimed to have paraphrased in his remarks. Although Bitakwira walked away free, this attitude drew criticism and fueled accusations of incitement to tribal hatred.

International implications:

The condemnation of Bitakwira’s remarks was not limited to Congolese territory. The European Union also reacted, calling his remarks an incitement to inter-ethnic violence. In a letter addressed to the Minister of Justice, Jean-Marc Châtaigner, head of the European Union delegation in Kinshasa, expresses his indignation and recalls that Bitakwira is already under EU restrictive measures due to its previous incitement to violence and discrimination.

Conclusion :

Justin Bitakwira’s remarks against the Banyamulenge Tutsi community and the Bashi caused widespread outcry. Not only are these statements irresponsible, but they also fuel tribal hatred and threaten social cohesion in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Condemnations by Congolese justice and the international community highlight the importance of combating hate speech and promoting peaceful coexistence between different communities in the DRC
