“Ethnic clash in Ndwa, Bolobo: Deadly land tensions in the DRC”

Ethnic clash in Ndwa, Bolobo: A sad event reminiscent of land tensions

Thursday, July 20, a tragic ethnic clash occurred in Ndwa, territory of Bolobo in the province of Maï-Ndombe in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This violent confrontation, which took place in the middle of the forest, unfortunately resulted in the death of one person and several injuries.

The origin of this ethnic fight is based on a land dispute between the Tende of the territory of Yumbi and those of the territory of Bolobo. Members of these two communities clashed with machetes in a struggle for control of land and agricultural spaces.

National deputy Willy Bolio, elected from Bolobo, expresses his concern and strongly condemns these acts of violence, especially since they occur in the midst of an election. He says that tensions related to land disputes existed before, but that the growing violence of this current situation is particularly unacceptable.

The administrator of Bolobo territory, Jonathan Ipoma, confirms this sad reality and sent a letter to the provincial authorities of Maï-Ndombe, calling for a rapid and forceful intervention by the police in order to restore public order in the region.

This incident highlights the persistent challenges faced by many communities in the DRC regarding land and access to resources. Land disputes can quickly degenerate into inter-ethnic violence, jeopardizing security and social cohesion.

There is an urgent need for local and national authorities to take effective action to resolve these land issues and promote peaceful dialogue between communities. It is also essential to strengthen the presence of security forces in sensitive areas and to put in place conflict resolution mechanisms in order to avoid such tragedies in the future.

Peace and reconciliation between the different ethnic groups of the DRC are essential elements to ensure a sustainable and harmonious development of the country. It is time for more sustained efforts to resolve these land issues and promote living together between communities
