News in the DRC: Teachers call for a peaceful return to school
The Synergy of Teachers’ Unions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) recently held a general assembly to assess the 2022-2023 school year and make recommendations for the next school year. They expressed concern about the new salary scale, which they said would enable teachers to cope with the rising cost of living.
One of their main demands is the suspension of a tax of 10,000 Congolese francs (FC) arbitrarily applied to their salaries and the restitution of the loss of earnings since last April. The teachers also recommend that the government consolidate free basic education by building new schools.
At the same time, they demand the payment of a uniform salary and bonus for all primary school teachers. According to their spokesperson, Jean-Bosco Puna, “the State will also have to increase the operating costs of schools and management offices”.
The Synergy of Teachers’ Unions in the DRC reminds the government that respecting its commitments is essential to ensure a peaceful return to school for the year 2023-2024.
This request comes after the declaration of the Minister of Primary, Secondary and Technical Education (EPST), Tony Mwaba, expressing the government’s desire to guarantee a good return to school in the DRC during the work of the joint Government-union bench committee in Kisantu.
It is essential that the government take into account the teachers’ recommendations in order to guarantee optimal teaching conditions and to support the education sector in the DRC. By investing in the construction of schools and ensuring adequate remuneration for teachers, the government will contribute to improving the quality of education and thus promote the development of the country.
It is crucial that all stakeholders work together to create an environment conducive to learning and growth for students in the DRC. By putting education at the center of concerns and responding to the legitimate demands of teachers, the DRC will be able to build a better future for its youth.
