Title: Joint FARDC and UPDF operations: towards lasting stability in eastern DRC
Introduction :
In Beni territory, North Kivu, the Congolese (FARDC) and Ugandan (UPDF) armed forces jointly carried out operations to fight against armed groups and restore security in the region. The results of these coordinated efforts are encouraging, but much remains to be done to completely eradicate the presence of armed groups in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This article examines the importance of joint operations between FARDC and UPDF and highlights the challenges that persist.
Objectives achieved:
Joint operations between FARDC and UPDF have already achieved several important objectives. The recovery of Kambi ya Jua and the securing of the RN4 of Beni-Kasindi contributed to reestablishing the circulation of populations and their goods in complete safety. Hundreds of hostages were freed, bringing calm to parts of the Ruwenzori sector.
An essential collaboration:
The success of these joint operations relies on the close collaboration between the FARDC and the UPDF. Both armies must speak the same language on the front line to maximize their effectiveness. Coordinating efforts, sharing intelligence and exchanging expertise are essential to ensure the success of operations and achieve tangible results.
Challenges to overcome:
Despite the progress made, it is important to recognize that challenges persist in the fight against armed groups in eastern DRC. These groups have adapted and often have in-depth knowledge of the terrain, which makes their neutralization more complex. In addition, some groups continue to benefit from the support of local militias and criminal networks, thus fueling their power and capacity for harm.
Towards lasting stability:
To achieve lasting stability in eastern DRC, it is crucial to strengthen and continue joint operations between FARDC and UPDF. It also requires a multifaceted approach, including socio-economic development efforts, the fight against corruption and impunity, and the strengthening of security and justice institutions.
Conclusion :
The joint operations between the FARDC and the UPDF in eastern DRC are a step in the right direction to restore security and stability in the region. Despite persistent challenges, these coordinated efforts have made significant progress. It is essential to continue and intensify this collaboration in order to achieve lasting stability and guarantee the security of the populations of eastern DRC
