In a recent tragic incident, the rebels of the Democratic and Allied Forces (ADF) have carried out a new incursion into the Babila Bakwanza chieftaincy, in Ituri province, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to information provided by Maître John Vuleverio, Coordinator of the new Congolese civil society in Mambasa, the attack took place on Thursday, July 13, 2023.
Local sources reported that the death toll from the attack has since risen to 12 civilians. Nine of them were found north of Elake village, while three others were killed in Mangina-Pori, in the Babila Bapwele groupement. It is also worrying to report that more than 20 other bodies of civilians killed by the terrorists are still present in Mangina-Pori.
Faced with this escalation of violence, Master John Vuleverio called on the military authorities to intensify their offensive operations against the ADF. There is an urgent need to put an end to these attacks and to protect the civilian population who live in terror and insecurity.
This new attack by the ADF rebels highlights the importance of finding lasting and effective solutions to fight against the armed groups that are rampant in certain regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Cooperation between military authorities, security forces and civil society is essential to restore peace and security in these vulnerable areas.
It is also crucial that the international community continue to support the efforts of the Congolese government in its fight against armed groups and in promoting stability and sustainable development. Humanitarian aid, the training of security forces and the strengthening of local capacities are key elements in creating an environment conducive to peace and prosperity for all Congolese.
It is essential to recall that the protection of civilians is a primary responsibility of the State and its security forces. The Congolese population deserves to live in a safe and secure environment, where the fundamental rights of each individual are respected.
In conclusion, this new incursion by the ADF rebels into the Babila Bakwanza chiefdom in Ituri is a tragic reminder of the fragility of the security situation in certain regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Urgent action is needed to end the violence and ensure the protection of civilians
