Deadly ambush attributed to ADF rebels in the village of Mapobu-Carriere
New act of deadly violence in the Beni region, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). An ambush attributed to ADF rebels (Allied Democratic Forces) took place in the village of Mapobu-Carriere, located in the northeast of the city of Oicha. According to initial information, several victims have been recorded, including an active member of civil society.
Mandela Muhithe, the second vice-president of the civil society of the Babumba-Kisiki Group in the Beni-Mbau sector, lost his life during this ambush. Muhithe was a committed civil society actor, who regularly denounced the atrocities perpetrated by the ADF. Civil society in Beni territory is in mourning and fears for the safety of the population in the face of the strengthening of ADF rebel activities in the region, particularly in the triangle of death including the localities of Nzuma-Mavivi, Kinziki-Mbau, Bilimani and Mapobu.
This ambush comes only a few days after the announcement by the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) of the neutralization of three ADF rebels in the territory of Beni. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the security forces, ADF activities persist and continue to cause casualties.
The situation in the Beni region remains worrying, with an upsurge in attacks by armed groups, including the ADF. There is an urgent need to step up efforts to secure and protect civilians. The people of the region deserve to live in a safe and peaceful environment, and it is essential to end the impunity that surrounds these acts of violence.
It is important that the international community continues to support the DRC in its fight against armed groups and that it ensures that justice is done for the victims. It is also crucial to strengthen conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms, in order to foster lasting peace in the region.
Information on this ambush and its victims is still being collected, and it is essential that the truth be established in order to pay tribute to the victims and to fight against impunity. The DRC needs support and solidarity to overcome these challenges and move towards a future of peace and stability
