Title: The Executive Council of the African Union meets to discuss regional integration and the future of Africa
Introduction :
The African Union Executive Council met recently for a four-day meeting to discuss key topics such as the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), education, budgetary issues, candidatures to international bodies, institutional reforms of the AU and Agenda 2063. This crucial meeting demonstrates the commitment of the African Union towards regional integration, peace, security and economic development of Africa .
Development:
In his opening address, Dr. Alfred Mutua, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kenya, stressed the need for African Union Member States to accelerate regional integration and leverage their comparative advantages to promote free trade and unlocking Africa’s collective socio-economic potential. He also stressed the importance of consolidating Africa’s voice on climate change and getting a fair share of global trade and investment.
The meeting was also an opportunity for the Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment of the African Union, Madam Josefa Sacko, to stress the importance of coordination and harmonization of policies to accelerate the integration of the continent. She mentioned that this bi-annual coordination meeting would assess the state of African integration and distribute the tasks between the AU, RECs, RMs and Member States.
This meeting brought together delegates from all AU Member States, who shared their views on the topics discussed and worked together to achieve the ambitious goals of Agenda 2063 and the Free Trade Agreement African continental. It is essential that African countries strengthen their cooperation and collaboration in order to promote the economic and social development of the continent.
