“Opposition uprising in the Democratic Republic of Congo following the brutal murder of Chérubin Okende: CENCO’s call for justice”

In recent news, an atrocious event shook the Democratic Republic of Congo. Yesterday morning, the lifeless body of Chérubin Okende, a political opponent, was discovered. This murder provoked strong reactions, in particular from the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO).

CENCO strongly condemns this “ignominious and villainous” act, underlining its particularly shocking character in the run-up to the general elections. According to the Catholic bishops, this intolerable crime risks aggravating the political tensions already present in the country.

In a press release, Marcel Utembi, President of CENCO and Archbishop of Kisangani, called on the Congolese authorities to shed full light on this savage crime and to bring those responsible for this assassination to justice. It is also important to note that CENCO offered its sincere condolences to the biological and political family of Chérubin Okende, expressing its solidarity and prayers for God to grant eternal rest to his son.

This brutal murder comes in a context where the arrests of members of the political opposition are increasing and where verbal and physical violence are becoming more and more frequent. CENCO therefore expresses its concern at these events which threaten national cohesion and asks the authorities to take appropriate measures to preserve the safety of people and their property.

In conclusion, this shocking assassination of Chérubin Okende sparks outrage and raises questions about the security and credibility of the upcoming elections in the DRC. It is essential that those responsible for this crime be brought to justice and that concrete measures be taken to preserve the peace and stability of the country
