“Félix Tshisekedi mobilizes SADC to restore security in eastern DRC and Mozambique”

The Head of State, Félix Tshisekedi, recently participated in an extraordinary summit of the Troika of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) by videoconference. The objective of this meeting was to discuss the modalities for the deployment of SADC troops in eastern DRC, in order to restore order and security in the region.

In his speech, President Tshisekedi stressed the urgency of the situation and the importance of restoring security in North Kivu. He pointed out in particular that this instability jeopardizes the participation of the displaced in the upcoming general elections, which goes against their constitutional right.

The SADC Chairman-in-Office also called for the rapid implementation of the joint roadmap of the Nairobi and Luanda Processes, as well as the Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Recovery and Stabilization Program (PDRRC-S), with the support of the United Nations.

This meeting also discussed the security situation in the province of Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, where the presence of terrorist groups threatens stability. The Troika welcomed the progress made by the SADC regional force in this area and expressed the wish for a contribution from the international community to finance the SADC peace missions.

The summit was chaired by Dr. Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia and Chairman of the SADC Organ for Politics, Defense and Security Cooperation.

It is clear that the security situation in eastern DRC and in the province of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique presents major challenges for the region. Félix Tshisekedi’s active participation in this summit and his efforts to mobilize the international community testify to his commitment to solving these problems.

It is essential that concrete measures be taken to restore security and stability in these regions, in order to allow the return of displaced persons and the holding of elections in optimal conditions. Cooperation among SADC member countries and support from the international community will be key factors in achieving this goal.

President Tshisekedi has clearly expressed the urgency of the situation and the need for rapid action. It is now crucial to bring these discussions to fruition and to implement the necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the populations concerned.
