In a sad event this Thursday, July 13, the spokesperson for the Congolese political party Ensemble pour la République, Chérubin Okende Senga, was tragically assassinated. This heinous act provoked strong reactions from several Congolese political figures, including Moïse Katumbi Chapwe, Martin Fayulu Madidi and Christophe Mboso.

Moïse Katumbi Chapwe, president of Ensemble pour la République and Congolese opponent, strongly condemned this assassination which he described as a “political murder”. In an interview with RFI, he expressed his anger at this attack on freedom of expression and the rights of opponents. Katumbi promised to carry out an independent investigation to shed light on this case, saying that this act will not go unpunished.

For his part, Martin Fayulu Madidi, former Congolese presidential candidate and challenger to Félix Tshisekedi, said he was shocked and appalled by this murder. In a tweet, he denounced this heinous act which seems to be politically motivated. Fayulu called for the culprits to be identified and punished according to the rigor of the law.

Christophe Mboso, president of the lower house of the Congolese parliament, has expressed his demand for justice in this case. On behalf of the national representation, he called on the government to open in-depth investigations to identify and punish the perpetrators of this heinous crime. He stressed the importance of an inclusive and comprehensive investigation in order to achieve real justice.

The reactions are not limited only to the national level. The ambassadors of the United States and Great Britain to the Democratic Republic of Congo have called on Congolese authorities to quickly move the investigation into this politically motivated assassination. They stressed the importance of punishing those responsible in an exemplary manner.

This violent and political act calls into question the political stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It highlights the need to protect the lives and rights of political opponents, as well as to strengthen the rule of law in the country. Truth and justice must be at the heart of the investigation into this assassination, in order to preserve democracy and guarantee a better future for all Congolese
