“Congolese Ngumba Ibn wins the 2023 K. Fokam International Scrabble Tournament, a landmark victory for Africa”

The K. Fokam 2023 international Scrabble tournament, organized by the Ligue Professionnelle de Scrabble Francophone, recently took place in Kribi, Cameroon. This major competition brought together players from eight African countries, including Cameroon, Benin, Ivory Coast, Niger, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad, Gabon and Togo.

The big winner of this edition was the Congolese Ngumba Ibn, who managed to reach the final and brilliantly won the title of champion. It is a source of pride for the Democratic Republic of Congo to see one of its players successfully represent the country and hoist the national colors high.

This tournament, also known as the “K Fokam Millionaire Tournament”, was the scene of intense competition between the most talented African Scrabble players. Ibn Ngumba had to show great tenacity and a strong competitive spirit to fight his way to the final.

The journey to Kribi, where the tournament took place, was not easy for Ibn Ngumba and his playmate. Lacking financial means to fly, they had to cross the Congo River and take a bus that traveled all over Congo-Brazzaville to the Cameroonian border. They then found another means of transport to arrive in Kribi, a town they only know by name. These efforts and sacrifices show the determination and passion of the players to represent their country and participate in this competition.

The Millionaires K Fokam tournament is the initiative of Daniel Essomba, nicknamed “Master Gitan”, a talented Scrabble player and member of the STC Club of Yaoundé. He sought to give a new dimension to Scrabble in Cameroon by creating a tournament that offers opportunities for professionalization and allows players to live fully from their passion.

This competition marks a turning point in the world of Scrabble in general and offers new opportunities for players of this game which tests their linguistic and strategic skills. Professional Scrabble is starting to take shape in Cameroon thanks to this bold initiative.

The K. Fokam 2023 International Scrabble Tournament was a real success and allowed African players to demonstrate their talents and their passion for this game. Congratulations to Ngumba Ibn for his victory and to all the participants who made this event a true celebration of Scrabble in Africa
