Barbara Kanam: an emblematic figure of Congolese music appointed head of the Cultural Promotion Fund
The world of Congolese music celebrates today the appointment of Barbara Kanam as Director General of the Cultural Promotion Fund (FPC) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This musical artist is recognized for her talent and her success in the field of music, but also for her commitment to the promotion of Congolese culture.
Born in Bukavu, DRC, Barbara Kanam developed a passion for music very early on. After spending part of her life abroad, notably in South Africa, Ivory Coast and France, she returned to her country of origin to devote herself fully to her musical career.
His school and university career testifies to his determination and his thirst for knowledge. A student at the Belgian school in Kinshasa, she obtained her state diploma in Lubumbashi, before continuing her studies in economics in South Africa, then in international trade in Côte d’Ivoire.
It was in 1999, within the Dévotion orchestra, that Barbara Kanam truly discovered singing. She perfected her vocal technique at the Psalmody Academy and Rhema Bible School in Johannesburg, while learning to play the guitar. In doing so, she develops a unique musical style, mixing acoustic sounds with African and international influences.
His artistic career took off with the release of his first album “Mokili” in 1999, followed by “Teti” in 2003, which marked his entry into world music. Barbara Kanam won several prizes and distinctions, including the prestigious Kora for Best Female Hope in 2005.
Beyond her musical success, Barbara Kanam is distinguished by her patriotic commitment. During the difficult period of war imposed on the DRC by Rwanda, it did not hesitate to show its support for the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC). She was also appointed National Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), for the promotion of climate actions in the DRC.
The appointment of Barbara Kanam as head of the Cultural Promotion Fund is therefore a wise choice, combining artistic competence and commitment to Congolese culture. She will be accompanied in this mission by Didier Masela, also a musician, as Deputy Managing Director.
This appointment marks an important step in the promotion of Congolese culture and opens new perspectives for the country’s artistic development. Barbara Kanam, with her bewitching voice and her undeniable talent, will certainly be able to breathe new life into the Cultural Promotion Fund and contribute to highlighting the cultural wealth of the DRC.
