Kinshasa, the psychosis of serial kidnappings: the population demands drastic measures

Serial kidnappings in Kinshasa: an alarming situation that arouses psychosis

For some time, the multiplication of cases of kidnappings of people in Kinshasa has created a wave of concern and panic among the inhabitants. This situation of growing insecurity was noted by the editorial staff of CONGOPROFOND. NET, which interviewed several residents of the Congolese capital to understand the impact of these events.

Marcel Muamba, a store employee of Indo-Pakistani origin residing in the commune of Masina, testifies: “One of my cousins was kidnapped by armed men while he was on board a taxi. He was held captive for three days, before being released after paying a ransom of $500 via Mobile Money”. He also adds, “In my neighborhood, we have recorded three cases of kidnappings, one of which unfortunately ended in death. We live in constant fear and wonder who will be the next victim.”

These kidnappings are mainly carried out using yellow taxis, commonly known as “Ketches”. The population, which often uses these taxis to get around, has expressed its concerns to the authorities and is calling for drastic measures to put an end to this scourge.

It is important to underline that the police recently succeeded in getting hold of a group of individuals responsible for these kidnappings, and about thirty people were arrested and sentenced. However, the population considers the action of the police ineffective, since the cases of kidnappings continue to increase alarmingly.

This situation has created a climate of widespread mistrust in the capital. Both taxi drivers and passengers are now suspicious of each other, making it even more difficult for drivers who are struggling to find customers. Their livelihood is seriously threatened.

Faced with this worrying situation, the competent authorities, in particular the national and provincial interior ministers, must act quickly and take effective measures to put an end to this wave of kidnappings. It is time for the population to find peace and security in the Congolese capital.

In conclusion, the multiplication of kidnappings in Kinshasa has plunged the population into a veritable psychosis. It is urgent that the authorities take adequate measures to combat this scourge and guarantee the safety of the inhabitants of the capital. Confidence and tranquility must be restored so that everyone can go about their daily business without fearing for their lives.
