Title: The threat to the democratic space in Kasaï-Central: LUCHA is sounding the alarm
Introduction :
In a volatile political context, the province of Kasaï-Central, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, faces an upsurge in political tensions and a growing restriction of the democratic space. The citizens’ movement LUCHA (Fight for Change) recently issued a statement denouncing acts of political intolerance and human rights abuses perpetrated by a group of activists from a well-identified political party. This article will review the facts and highlight LUCHA’s concerns about the democratic future of Kasai-Central province.
The alarming observation of LUCHA:
Since Governor John Kabeya Shikeyi came to power, Kasai-Central province has been the scene of much political violence. LUCHA denounces acts of vandalism, physical attacks, torture, intimidation, arbitrary arrests and even programs inciting hatred. These actions are attributed to a group of political activists affiliated with the UDPS (Union for Democracy and Social Progress) and its allies.
LUCHA, as the voice of citizen movements for change, strongly condemns this degradation of the democratic space and the establishment of dictatorial power in the province of Kasaï-Central. It recalls the foundations of the rule of law and calls on Governor John Kabeya to respect democratic standards as well as the fundamental rights of the population.
LUCHA recommendations:
Faced with this deterioration of the situation, LUCHA makes several recommendations. First, it asks the Minister of the Interior to transfer the commander of the Congolese National Police (PNC) in the city, Colonel John Mbela, for his inability to maintain order and his possible complicity in certain violations of human rights.
It also stresses the importance of respect for the rule of law and democratic principles, not only in the province of Kasaï-Central, but throughout the country.
Upcoming actions:
LUCHA warns against the authorities’ inaction in the face of these concerns. If the recommendations are not taken into account, the movement plans to carry out large-scale actions to defend the rights and freedoms of citizens.
Conclusion :
Kasai-Central province is going through a difficult period democratically, with increasing restriction of political space and human rights abuses. LUCHA, as a citizen movement committed to change, is sounding the alarm and calling for an urgent reaction. It is essential that the relevant authorities take steps to protect the rule of law and guarantee democracy in the province of Kasaï-Central, in order to ensure a more just and equitable future for all Congolese citizens
