The K. Fokam 2023 International Scrabble Tournament, which took place in Kribi, Cameroon from July 2 to 8, was a real success. Organized by the Ligue Professionnelle de Scrabble Francophone, this event brought together players from eight African countries, including Cameroon, Benin, Ivory Coast, Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad, Gabon and Togo. .
The big winner of this tournament was Ngumba Ibn, representing the Democratic Republic of Congo. With an exceptional career and unwavering determination, he managed to win the final against Chadian player Iram Rilengar Maxime. Ngumba Ibn thus became the African Scrabble champion, making his country proud.
Ngumba Ibn’s journey to victory was not easy. Due to lack of financial means, he and his playmate had to take a long bus trip from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Kribi, a distance of over 2,500 kilometers. Despite all the difficulties encountered, they wanted to represent their country with pride.
This international Scrabble tournament, nicknamed “the K Fokam millionaires tournament”, is the result of the efforts of Daniel Essomba, a passionate Scrabble player and member of the STC Club of Yaoundé. He wanted to develop this sport by professionalizing it, thus offering players the opportunity to live fully from their art. Its objective is to change the image of Scrabble in Cameroon and lay the foundations for professional Scrabble on a global scale.
The success of this tournament and the determination of the players demonstrate the enthusiasm and talent present in the world of Scrabble in Africa. This event also made it possible to strengthen the links between the various participating countries and to promote the practice of this stimulating and captivating game.
