The Busanga hydroelectric power plant: an energy revolution for the sustainable development of the DRC
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) can boast of a new achievement in the energy sector with the commissioning of the Busanga hydroelectric plant. Located in the province of Lualaba, this plant, built thanks to financing of 656 million dollars from SICOMINES S.A., has been operational since last year.
With a production capacity of 240 MW, the Busanga power plant is a major project that marks a major step forward in the field of energy in the DRC. Initially intended to meet the energy needs of SICOMINES for its mining project, the Busanga plant is also positioned as an electricity supply solution for the province of Lualaba and the Greater Katanga region.
It is important to emphasize that the DRC faces a significant energy deficit, mainly due to the difficulties encountered by the National Electricity Company (SNEL). This hydroelectric project thus makes it possible to partially compensate for this deficit and to promote the development of the sector.
In addition to its benefits for SICOMINES and the Congolese population, the Busanga plant also has benefits for the financial partners. Indeed, the Chinese investors, who participated in the financing of the project in collaboration with Congolese shareholders, hold a stake in Sino-Congolese Hydroelectric Busanga SA.
In terms of energy production, 170 MW are intended to guarantee the annual production capacity of SICOMINES, which aims to produce 250,000 tons of copper per year. The remaining 70 MW are intended for the commercialization of electricity in the DRC and the supply of other infrastructures, thus promoting the development of Congolese industry.
In addition, the commissioning of the Busanga plant allows SNEL to recover 50 MW of electricity, which was previously supplied to SICOMINES. This amount of energy can now be used to meet the needs of the DRC’s population and industries.
Thus, the Busanga hydroelectric power plant represents a major step forward for the sustainable development of the DRC. By providing a reliable and sustainable source of energy, it helps fill the energy gap and support the country’s economic development.
Thanks to this project, the DRC can strengthen its production capacities and promote local industry. Moreover, the participation of Chinese investors in the Busanga plant shows the confidence placed in the development potential of the DRC.
In conclusion, the Busanga hydroelectric plant opens up new prospects for energy in the DRC. This project marks a step forward towards energy independence and contributes to the country’s sustainable development. It is also an example of successful partnership between the DRC and foreign investors, thus promoting the economic development of the country.
