In the round of 16, he eliminated the Gabonese Ilagou Schelick, double vice-world scrabble champion. In the quarters and semi-finals, he defeated two other talented Gabonese players, Beyeme and Kakou Toyo. In the final, it was against the Chadian champion Iram Rilengar Maxime that Ibn Ngumba won the victory, thus securing the title of African champion.
