“LUCHA denounces the decline of democracy in the province of Kasaï-Central and calls for urgent measures”

Amid growing concerns about restrictions on democratic space in Kasai-Central province, the citizens’ movement LUCHA recently expressed concerns about the current situation. According to a statement issued by this organization, acts of political intolerance, vandalism, physical aggression, torture, intimidation and arbitrary arrests were perpetrated by a group of activists from a specific political party, in in this case the UDPS and its allies.

This bleak picture calls into question the democratic advances achieved so far in the province, and LUCHA strongly condemns the backsliding of democracy and the rise of totalitarian rule. The movement calls on Governor John Kabeya Shikeyi to strictly respect democratic standards and also demands the transfer of the commander of the Congolese national police, Colonel John Mbela, for his inability to maintain order and his complicity in recent incidents.

LUCHA also warns against a possible intensification of its actions if these recommendations are not taken into account. It should be recalled that in December 2022, LUCHA and civil society activists in Congo were violently attacked by a group of unidentified people during a demonstration for the repair of the Kananga-Kalambambuji road.

This statement by LUCHA highlights the persistent challenges facing the provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo in their quest for democracy and the rule of law. It also underlines the importance of the vigilance of civil society and citizens’ movements in the protection and promotion of democratic values.

It is crucial that the authorities take these concerns seriously and act decisively to guarantee freedom of expression, fundamental rights and democratic principles in Kasaï-Central province. Only a real political will to respect and promote these values will make it possible to overcome the current challenges and build a more democratic and inclusive society.
