In a recent press release, the citizens’ movement LUCHA denounces the acts of political intolerance and the restrictions of the democratic space in the province of Kasaï-Central, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since Governor John Kabeya Shikeyi came to power, LUCHA has seen an upsurge in vandalism, physical attacks, torture and arbitrary arrests perpetrated by a group of activists from the UDPS political party and its allies.
Faced with this worrying situation, LUCHA strongly condemns the decline of democracy and the establishment of totalitarian power in the province. She calls on John Kabeya to strictly respect democratic standards and asks the Minister of the Interior to transfer the commander of the Congolese national police for his incapacity and his possible complicity.
LUCHA also announces that it will take far-reaching measures if these recommendations are not taken into account. She recalls that, on December 10, 2022, LUCHA and Congolese civil society activists were violently attacked by an unidentified group while peacefully demonstrating to demand the start of work on the Kananga-Kalambambuji road.
This statement by LUCHA highlights the persistent challenges faced by citizen movements in the DRC, as well as the threats to democratic space in certain regions of the country. It is essential that the Congolese authorities take measures to guarantee the protection of fundamental rights and the freedom of expression of all citizens, in order to foster a genuine rule of law and a solid democracy.
It is important that the international community remain vigilant and support the efforts of Congolese citizens’ movements in their struggle to promote democratic values and human rights. LUCHA and other civil society organizations play a crucial role in defending citizens’ rights and promoting social justice in the DRC.
It is therefore essential that the Congolese authorities take seriously the concerns expressed by LUCHA and respond appropriately by guaranteeing the safety and protection of human rights defenders. Democracy and the rule of law are essential foundations for the development and stability of a country, and their preservation requires constant commitment and political will.
In this article, we wanted to highlight the actions of LUCHA in its fight for the respect of democratic standards in the province of Kasaï-Central. It is essential to raise public awareness of these issues and to encourage the efforts of Congolese citizens’ movements in their fight for democracy and justice
