“Historic visit by President Ramaphosa to the DRC: a decisive step towards enhanced economic cooperation”

Official visit of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to the Democratic Republic of Congo: strengthening economic cooperation

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa traveled to Kinshasa for a two-day official visit, focused on strengthening economic cooperation between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Republic of South Africa (RSA). Welcomed by Congolese Prime Minister Jean Michel Sama Lukonde, President Ramaphosa was received face-to-face by his Congolese counterpart Félix Tshisekedi.

This visit follows a meeting between the two Presidents in December 2020, during which they discussed regional development and continental issues within the African Union. This time, the objective was to discuss ways to advance the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries.

Economic cooperation between the DRC and the RSA is of paramount importance for both countries. The DRC has abundant natural resources, particularly in the mining sector, while South Africa is the largest economy on the African continent. Closer cooperation in the economic field can promote the growth and socio-economic development of both nations.

During their meeting, the two Presidents were able to discuss the work of the large joint DRC-RSA commission and were briefed on the progress made so far. This commission is responsible for promoting trade, investment and bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Beyond economic cooperation, President Ramaphosa’s visit was also an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic ties between the DRC and the RSA. The two countries share common interests in peace and stability in Africa and collaborate regularly within the African Union and other regional bodies.

In conclusion, the official visit of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to the Democratic Republic of Congo marks an important step in the strengthening of economic and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries. This close collaboration offers opportunities for growth and mutual development, thus contributing to the prosperity of the region and to African integration.
