The 2023 K. Fokam International Scrabble Tournament, organized by the Ligue Professionnelle de Scrabble Francophone, took place from July 02 to 08 in Kribi, Cameroon. This event brought together players from eight African countries, with the aim of crowning the new African Champion of the discipline. Among the talented competitors present, it was the Congolese Ngumba Ibn who managed to impose himself, thus winning the coveted title.
A remarkable journey:
Ngumba Ibn, representing the Democratic Republic of Congo, showed great determination and exceptional talent throughout the competition. After intensive group stages, he managed to qualify for the final stages, where he chained impressive victories. In the final, he faced the Chadian champion Iram Rilengar Maxime and managed to beat him brilliantly, thus becoming the new African Scrabble Champion.
A trying journey in the name of the fatherland:
Ngumba Ibn’s journey to participate in the tournament was strewn with pitfalls. Due to a lack of financial means to fly, he and his companion had to cross the Congo River and travel by bus from Brazzaville to the Cameroonian border, more than 2,500 kilometers in two days. Despite the difficulties encountered, they wanted to proudly represent their country and managed to win the victory.
An initiative that promotes Scrabble in Africa:
This tournament, called “the K Fokam millionaires tournament”, is the initiative of Daniel ESSOMBA, also known as “Master Gitan”, a passionate Scrabble player. He wanted to give a new dimension to Scrabble in Africa and offer players the opportunity to live fully from their art. Thanks to his revolutionary project, he succeeded in bringing together the best African players and creating a real craze for this discipline.
