“Divided in the face of the 2023 presidential election, the Congolese opposition seeks to find its unity to challenge Félix Tshisekedi”

News: The Congolese opposition divided in the face of the 2023 presidential election

For several years, the Congolese opposition has sought to unite to face Félix Tshisekedi in the presidential election scheduled for December 2023. However, a group of four opponents are experiencing a silent strategic crack, questioning their ability to s unite and challenge the current president.

Moïse Katumbi Chapwe, Augustin Matata Ponyo, Delly Sesanga Hipungu Dja Kaseng, Martin Fayulu and Adolphe Muzito were once side by side in the fight against Tshisekedi, but they were divided on the strategy to adopt. Katumbi, Matata and Sesanga focus on the recomposition of the electoral system, highlighting the deviations of the electoral process and demanding a comprehensive grooming of the electoral architecture of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

They question the composition of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) and denounce the excessive tribalization of the electoral process, claiming that all the institutions in charge of the elections are politicized and tribalized. For these opponents, trust in the CENI is essential, but its current composition raises doubts about its impartiality.

On the other hand, Fayulu and Muzito advocate the truth of the ballot box despite the imperfections of the electoral process. They believe that focusing on reforms to the electoral system is a waste of time, and prefer to focus on popular mobilization and the defense of voters’ rights.

This division within the Congolese opposition raises questions about its ability to offer a credible alternative to Felix Tshisekedi. With the presidential election fast approaching, it is essential for the opposition to find common ground and present a unified strategy to challenge the incumbent president.

The political future of the Democratic Republic of the Congo will depend on the capacity of the opposition to overcome its divisions and to mobilize voters effectively. The 2023 presidential race will be a crucial test for the Congolese opposition, which will have to demonstrate its unity and determination to bring about the necessary changes in the country.
