The alarming rise in prices in the DRC: causes and solutions to improve the purchasing power of the population

The rise in the prices of basic necessities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a worrying phenomenon that directly impacts the purchasing power of the population. According to a recent report by the Public Expenditure Observatory (ODEP), several factors are responsible for this alarming situation.

ODEP points to the perpetuation of the neo-colonial system as one of the main problems. The consequences of the country’s historical economic exploitation continue to affect its present situation. Foreign companies, in collusion with local elites, take advantage of the DRC’s natural resources without really benefiting the population. This situation hampers economic development and contributes to the rise in prices of consumer goods, explains the Chairman of the Board of Directors of ODEP, Florimond Muteba.

Another cause put forward by the ODEP is the inappropriate application of liberal economic theories in the development of public policies. Economic approaches favoring free competition and reducing state intervention do not take into account the specific realities of the DRC. The economic policies put in place fail to stimulate growth and improve the living conditions of the population.

The ODEP investigation also underlines the complicity of the ruling classes with imperialism. The close ties between certain Congolese political and economic elites and foreign powers have an impact on the country’s political and economic decisions. This often leads to unfair agreements favoring foreign interests to the detriment of the well-being of Congolese citizens.

Finally, endemic corruption and embezzlement of public revenues are major scourges hampering good governance in the DRC. Funds that should be allocated to the development of the country and the improvement of public services are often diverted for personal gain. This contributes to the inefficiency of public institutions and the impoverishment of the population.

Faced with these alarming findings, the ODEP insists on the need for more equitable economic policies and governance, as well as effective measures to fight against corruption. These initiatives are essential to promote sustainable economic development and improve the living conditions of the Congolese.

The publication of this survey by the ODEP aims not only to challenge the Congolese government to prioritize solutions with the resources available to the country, but also to raise awareness among Congolese intellectuals so that they can propose reflections to change the country policies. Collective action is needed to put an end to this situation of high cost of living and restore the purchasing power of the Congolese population
