Friday, July 7, a tragic road accident bereaved the town of Likasi, in the province of Haut-Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Eight people lost their lives following a collision between a bus and a broken down truck on the Likasi road, located about 18 kilometers from the city.

The local authorities as well as the police have confirmed the death toll of 8 during this accident. According to the information gathered, the bus, coming from the city of Lubumbashi, would have violently struck the Howo truck which was immobilized on the roadway near Nguya.

The mayor of Likasi town, Henri Mungomba, said excessive speed was the cause of this tragic accident. It is important to point out that this road is known to be accident prone, and this event is unfortunately not the first of its kind to occur on this stretch.

Linking Lubumbashi to Kolwezi via Likasi, this road is used daily by many vehicles, which increases the risk of accidents. Local authorities must take measures to improve road safety and prevent such tragedies in the future.
