The European Union supports the elections in the DRC to guarantee democracy and stability
In a recent press release, the European Union (EU) expressed its commitment to accompany the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on the way to competitive, peaceful, inclusive and transparent elections which are scheduled for December 2023. The EU recognizes the work of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) and takes into account the criticisms and concerns expressed by opposition political parties and civil society organizations.
The EU calls on the CENI and all stakeholders to work closely together to ensure the holding of fully inclusive, free, transparent and peaceful elections in the DRC. According to the EU, guaranteeing the integrity of the electoral process requires respect for fundamental freedoms such as freedom of expression, assembly, association and movement. Any excessive or disproportionate use of force in response to peaceful demonstrations or arbitrary detentions is considered incompatible with the requirement of the integrity of the electoral process.
Furthermore, the EU stresses the importance of condemning hate speech and xenophobia at all levels. It calls on Congolese political actors to firmly oppose any action or attitude aimed at denigrating an ethnic group, a minority or a religious community. The EU insists that those who incite or resort to violence must be held accountable. It also condemns speech likely to fuel inter-ethnic violence, saying that attempts at division based on ethnicity, religion, language, region or origin will not be tolerated.
The European Union’s commitment to the DRC and the holding of democratic elections testifies to the importance attached by the international community to the consolidation of democracy and stability in the country. These elections represent a crucial step for the future of the DRC and it is essential that all stakeholders work together to guarantee a fair, transparent and peaceful electoral process. The success of these elections will help strengthen democracy in the DRC and ensure a stable political transition to the future
