Security challenges in Beni territory in the Democratic Republic of Congo continue to worry provincial deputy Celse Muhindo Magezi. In a recent statement, he painted a bleak picture of the situation, highlighting the problems facing our military.
According to the deputy, the Congolese army is facing logistical challenges and a reduced workforce, which limits its ability to fight effectively against the enemy. He also points out that despite the support of the Ugandan army (UPDF), which has sophisticated logistics, joint operations are not progressing quickly.
Magezi also deplores the massacres, burning of vehicles and other acts of violence that continue to occur in the region. He accuses some leaders of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) of neglecting the alerts of the population, as was the case during the recent Kasindi massacre.
To remedy this situation, the MP calls for the FARDC to better take into account the warnings of the population and pleads for a dialogue between the security forces, NGOs and the population. He believes that a civil-military marriage is necessary to put an end to insecurity.
In his exchanges with General Dic Holumu, head of the joint UPDF-FARDC operation, Magezi asked to expand the operation’s radius of action and to intensify efforts in the Far North to counter the enemy who seems to move freely in the area.
The MP also underlines the impact of insecurity on the socio-economic life of the population in the Far North. Roads are in advanced disrepair, hampering travel and affecting economic activities. The population finds itself landlocked and suffers the consequences of insecurity.
Despite the challenges, Magezi says he received assurances from General Holumu regarding efforts to bring peace to the region.
It is important to take into account the concerns raised by MP Magezi and to work actively to strengthen security in the territory of Beni. The commitment of security forces, collaboration with local actors and adequate logistical support are essential to combat insecurity and restore stability in the region
