Collaborating for a cleaner city: taxi drivers commit to Butembo

Obstruction of main thoroughfares by taxis is a recurring problem in many cities. But in Butembo, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a collaboration between local authorities and taxi drivers aims to find a solution to this urban disorder.

During discussions that took place on Monday, July 03, 2023, the local police commander exchanged with representatives of the various corporations of taxi drivers in the city. Among the resolutions taken, we find in particular the desire to make taxi drivers aware of staying in their respective car parks and not obstructing public roads. This collaboration with the local authority also aims to contribute to the sanitation of the city.

Jérôme Malule, from the Réseau des Taximen du Congo (RETAC), stresses the importance of civic education for all actors in the economic life of the city, including itinerant traders who place their goods on the road. He calls for a common commitment to improve the cleanliness of Butembo.

The Senior Principal Commissioner Polo Ngoma di-Ntoto Jean-Paul welcomes these fruitful exchanges and announces that coercive actions will be taken against itinerant traders who persist in obstructing the road.

This collaboration between taxi drivers and local authorities aims to make the city of Butembo cleaner, like the city of 2005. It is essential that everyone takes their responsibilities and contributes to the safety and beautification of the city.

In conclusion, this collaborative initiative between taxi drivers and local authorities in Butembo shows the will to solve the problems of obstruction of the main arteries and sanitation of the city. Civic education and shared commitment are needed to create a cleaner and safer urban environment for all
