The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) announced this Sunday, June 25 the postponement of the voter registration and identification operation in Kwamouth in the province of Mai-Ndombe for reasons safe. This decision follows the request of the provincial assembly of Mai-Ndombe which requires large-scale military operations to restore security in the region. In a joint statement read to the press, the provincial deputies stressed that several villages are still occupied by Mobondo militiamen and that the population is still on the move.
The president of the CENI, Denis Kadima, made this announcement during the convocation of the electorate for the national deputation taking place in Kinshasa. The voter registration and identification operation was due to start on Monday June 26 in Kwamouth, but was therefore not launched for security reasons.
This news once again demonstrates the difficulties facing the DRC, particularly in terms of security. Indeed, several armed groups operate in the country, despite the efforts made by the authorities to eradicate them. This unstable situation is not conducive to the development of the country, which is still largely underdeveloped despite its natural wealth.
It is therefore essential that measures be taken to strengthen security and enable residents to return to their homes. The Congolese government must work with local and international security forces to deal with this dangerous and worrying situation.
