How Butembo in eastern DRC is trying to tackle growing insecurity

The city of Butembo, in the province of North Kivu, has been plagued by growing insecurity for several months. Armed robbery accompanied by targeted assassinations of civilians and economic operators affects the local population on a daily basis. The provincial authority, Lieutenant-General Constant Ndima Kongba, points in particular to the low number of soldiers from the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo), engaged in the fighting against the M-23/RDF rebels.

The issue of security is a key issue in the region, but also throughout the country. Faced with this worrying situation, the World Bank and political actors have taken initiatives to deal with it. In addition, civil society in the DRC is on alert to ensure credible elections and democratic stability.

The recovery of ADF strongholds by the Congolese armed forces is an important step in the fight against armed groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, CENCO, the episcopal conference of the DRC, calls for an urgent resolution of the security crisis in the east of the country.

Despite the growing insecurity, young people from Lituri have decided to mobilize for peace, testifying to an inter-community dialogue in Ituri, which is a hope for peace. Young people are committed to peace, but the challenges remain numerous.

Police reform in the DRC is also underway to strengthen peace, security and the rule of law. Finally, Emmanuel Macron launched a world summit for a new financial pact in favor of a green and sustainable economy.

The DRC has to face up to essential issues of security, political stability and the environment, which require constant attention and effective initiatives at all levels.
