The province of Kwango in the Democratic Republic of Congo is again under curfew due to the threat of the Mobondo militia which has appeared in several villages in the region, advancing towards the border with the neighboring province of Kongo Central. The decision was made after the provincial government saw the advancement of militiamen in the area.
Three militiamen were arrested by the security services in the Kolokoso sector before carrying out their attack. They confessed that their reorganization was decided because they feared military action from Kinshasa after the state examination session.
This situation is the same as last May when an attack by the Mobondo militia in the village of Batshongo led to the death of 11 people and the establishment of a curfew in the province. This measure was lifted after a few weeks thanks to the deployment of the army.
The provincial government of Kwango insists on the need for dialogue with the militiamen to pacify the region. A pacification commission will be set up to facilitate these exchanges.
This new curfew situation further weakens the region, which faces many challenges for its economic and social development. The Democratic Republic of Congo must imperatively find solutions to these problems for the well-being of its population and the stability of the region.
