The Democratic Republic of Congo has just adopted a new law establishing the Armed Defense Reserve. This law received the unanimous approval of both chambers of parliament and was sent to President Félix Tshiseskedi for promulgation. According to the correspondence addressed to Félix Tshiseskedi, the law was adopted in identical terms by the National Assembly and the Senate. This correspondence is signed by the presidents of two chambers, the speaker of the Senate Modeste Bahati Lukwebo and that of the National Assembly, Christophe Mboso Nkodia.
The establishment of this military reserve is part of the strategy to strengthen the DRC army initiated by President Tshiseskedi. This decision follows the security tensions experienced in recent years in different parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Congolese authorities have, moreover, repeatedly denounced the involvement of certain neighboring countries in the conflicts which bloody the national territory.
President Tshiseskedi thus intends to provide the Congolese army with a contingent of reservists capable of effectively helping the regular military forces to secure the entire Congolese territory. Several political, military and social actors have already welcomed this government decision, hoping that it will contribute to strengthening the security of the civilian population.
It should be noted that the DRC is the second largest state on the African continent and has experienced many security crises in recent years, mainly in the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, in the east of the country. With this new law, the Congolese government hopes to bring a lasting solution to these security crises as soon as possible.
