Armed attack in the Virunga National Park: two ecoguards lose their lives.

Today, we are sad to share tragic news that comes to us from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Two eco-guards were killed in an armed attack in Virunga National Park, in the east of the country. This attack adds to a long list of others that have claimed the lives of other eco-guards and civilian personnel.

The attack occurred near Rwindi in Rutshuru territory. The victims were part of a patrol team, which was attacked by men from the Mai-Mai Kabido armed group. The two eco-guards hit by bullets succumbed to their injuries. The situation is all the more dramatic as it comes only ten days after another attack which also claimed the lives of eco-guards and civilian personnel.

In a press release published on the ACTUALITE.CD website, the provincial leadership of the ICCN expressed its dismay. ICCN has denounced the crimes committed against its personnel, affirming that it is not their mission to take part in armed conflicts. The organization called on the political and military authorities to do more against these murderous acts.

These terrifying events highlight the importance of better addressing security issues in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and serve as a reminder that ecoguards risk their lives every day for nature conservation. We hope that those responsible for these acts will be brought to justice and that the authorities will work to ensure the security of national parks in the DRC.

Ultimately, we stand in solidarity with the families and colleagues of the victims, as well as with ICCN, and all those who fight to protect the environment and preserve our common future.
