National MP Edouard Mwangachuchu suspected of treason and links with the rebels: new revelations at the High Military Court.

The case of national deputy Edouard Mwangachuchu, suspected of having links with the M23 rebels, continues to make headlines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). According to a report by the National Intelligence Agency, MP Mwangachuchu is a member of the Rwandan diaspora in Kinshasa and works for the interests of Rwanda, despite the strained diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The offenses with which the defendants are charged include in particular treason, participation in an insurrectionary movement and the illegal possession of weapons of war. The investigation of the case continues this Friday, May 26, 2023 at the High Military Court, sitting in a mobile hearing at the Ndolo military prison.

Weapons of war were discovered in the residence of Edouard Mwangachuchu in Kinshasa as well as in the premises of his company SMB in Masisi, in the north of the province of North Kivu. Mwangachuchu’s co-defendant, commissioner Robert Mushamaliwa Balike will also be heard during the proceedings.

It should be noted that the DRC is often plagued by political tensions, as well as ethnic and armed conflicts on its territory. The recent revelations about the activities of MP Mwangachuchu raise serious concerns in an already very tense context.

Indeed, the situation remains unstable in some provinces of the country, such as Kwango where inter-ethnic conflicts regularly break out, or in eastern DRC where the M23 rebels have carried out armed actions in the past.

Nevertheless, the Congolese government seems determined to strengthen the DRC army to deal with threats on national territory, and thus protect the security of Congolese citizens and foreign nationals residing on Congolese soil.
