The Alliance of Forces for the Well-Being of the Congolese (AFBC), a platform close to the opposition, expressed itself in a press release following the march organized by the opposition on May 20, 2021 in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The demonstrators were protesting against the high cost of living and insecurity in the east of the country, as well as the electoral process, considered to be botched.
In its statement, the AFBC condemns the brutal repression of the march by the security forces, pointing out that the peaceful demonstrators were violently repressed and even brutalized by the Congolese national police supported by the army. The AFBC is deeply shocked by the serious violation of the right to protest and human rights.
Acts of violence were committed by the police, which aroused the indignation of several human rights defense platforms such as civil society and certain political actors. Opposition leaders denounced an attack on the freedom of peaceful demonstration.
For its part, the Congolese government demanded investigations into the violence committed by the security forces, while the High Military Court questioned the nationality and country of residence of one of the national deputies prosecuted for treason. and possession of weapons.
In this context, the fight for the establishment of democracy in the Democratic Republic of Congo remains a crucial issue for the AFBC and the political actors of the opposition, who have received the support and solidarity of the AFBC.
