The opposition march organized this Saturday, May 20, 2023 in Kinshasa was violently repressed by the police. Moïse Katumbi, president of the political party Together for the Republic, castigated this police and military repression which he attributes to the Head of State Félix Tshisekedi.
In an interview with Fatshimétrie, Moïse Katumbi expressed his disagreement with the violence perpetuated against peaceful demonstrators who are demanding an improvement in the living conditions of the Congolese. He recalls that their fight over time aimed to free the Congolese from poverty. He is concerned about the current situation marked by the high cost of living, corruption and insecurity in the east of the country.
He also deplores the brutality of the security forces and their disproportionate actions against peaceful demonstrators. He reminds us that the police must protect citizens and not brutalize them.
The opposition march was the first in a series of actions aimed at expressing the demands of the opposition. She had been postponed to May 20 for security reasons. The authorities had nevertheless given their authorization to three different political demonstrations, including that of the opposition.
Tension persists in the Democratic Republic of Congo where peaceful demonstrations are often violently repressed. Congolese continue to demand improved living conditions and greater government transparency
