Tension is mounting in relations between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The United States has issued a new request for Rwanda to withdraw its troops present in the province of North Kivu in support of the M23 terrorists. This request was made during a meeting between the Congolese Deputy Prime Minister and the American Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The arrival of Rwandan reinforcements in the region of Chanzu, Runyonyi and Bigega has been reported by the authorities. The Congolese government has deployed troops from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to combat the resurgence of armed groups in the east of the country. However, the American diplomat asked the Congolese government to better coordinate its efforts to protect the rights of citizens and the displaced.
The humanitarian situation in eastern DRC is worsening daily and the United States is the first country to respond to humanitarian needs. However, peace must be restored so that people can return to their homes. The DRC is facing a major humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by the armed conflicts that have dominated the east of the country for years.
The tension between the two countries has raised concerns about security in the region, especially regarding the gas and oil reserves that lie in the border areas. The next few months will be decisive for the stability of the region.
