“President Tshisekedi’s diplomatic visit to Oyo: an opportunity to discuss the security situation in eastern DRC”

The Civil Society Congress of North Kivu expects a lot from the visit of the President of the Republic to Oyo, in the sister Republic of Congo-Brazzaville. According to Edgard Mateso, first vice-president of the active forces in the region, the security situation in eastern DRC is worrying. Rebel groups, such as the M23, threaten the security of the population. Thus, the pacification of this region must be one of the priorities of Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, on a diplomatic visit to Oyo.

Moreover, in the context of the preparation of the elections in the DRC, Edgard Mateso believes that the electoral process must be inclusive and peaceful so that the population can participate in the governance of the nation. According to him, the authorities must take this issue seriously and find solutions so that the citizens of the territories of Rutshuru, Nyiragongo, Lubero and Beni, who have fled their village, can participate in the elections with complete peace of mind.

The trips of members of the government should also be an opportunity to discuss the security situation in eastern DRC and the pacification of the region. According to Edgard Mateso, the question of the M23, the condemnation of Rwanda for aggression on the DRC and the question of the war in the east of the DRC must be priorities.

The President of the Republic is currently making his diplomatic visit to Oyo in the sister Republic of Congo-Brazzaville. The objective is to promote bilateral trade between the two neighboring countries.

This trip gives civil society in North Kivu an opportunity to recall the importance of security and stability in eastern DRC for the holding of inclusive and transparent elections.
