DRC: Demonstration for the rehabilitation of national road number 2 in Bukavu
This Monday, May 15, students and civil society actors joined residents in protesting against the deplorable state of national road number 2 in Bukavu. The protest follows two fatal crashes that took place the previous weekend. Protesters set tires on fire and blocked the road. They demand that the government quickly rehabilitate this dangerous road.
Civil society actors staged a sit-in at the Office des Routes Sud-Kivu office to get answers from the government. Many denounced the delays in the road rehabilitation works, despite the funds allocated for this work.
Protesters said they would hold further protests if construction did not start soon. This protest comes in a difficult economic context, with growing political tensions, pending economic projects and security challenges
