Tense situation in the province of Kwango in the Democratic Republic of Congo: 11 dead in the violent clashes between the FARDC and the Mobondo militia

The situation remains tense in Kwango province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Violent clashes between the FARDC and the Mobondo militia, which began in Mongata and Batshongo, have so far resulted in 11 deaths, including beheaded soldiers. Provincial authorities have decreed a curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. to guarantee the safety of the population and property. The police will also patrol to avoid hassle to the population. Nevertheless, the situation in the region remains worrying due to the difficulty of estimating the number of displaced persons. Civil society reports that hundreds of people have fled the combat zone towards Kenge and at the Kwango bridge. In this context of growing insecurity, caution is required and the authorities must take rapid measures to restore security in the region.
