DRC news: Kinshasa police chief opposes opposition rally
The political situation in the DRC is still tense. Indeed, the Chief of Police of Kinshasa, General Sylvano Kasongo, burst into the headquarters of the presidential party in Limete to prevent the holding of a meeting of more than 20 people scheduled for Friday, May 12. According to him, the insecurity that reigns in the eastern part of the capital no longer allows the holding of a rally of this magnitude. Following this intervention, the secretary general of the presidential party, Augustin Kabuya, decided to dismiss the crowd.
The opposition cries out for the violation of the freedom to demonstrate, a right guaranteed by the Congolese Constitution. For her, this pretext is well found to repress opponents who will try to march on Saturday, May 20 in Kinshasa. The situation is therefore very tense, especially since General Sylvano Kasongo has insisted that any gathering of more than 20 people will be dispersed.
The political climate in the DRC is increasingly worrying, and the population is less and less convinced of the government’s ability to solve the problems. In this context, the Congolese authorities would be well advised to respect the Constitution and to listen to the demands of the opposition, in order to bring about an essential political relaxation.
