Recently, the governor of the province of South Kivu, Théo Ngwabidje Kasi announced some good news. Despite the tragedy affecting the region, he decided to form his couple into a foster family for two infants, a boy and a girl, who were miraculously saved after a week spent in distress on the lake. He will therefore recover them, and surround them with all the love and affection necessary to ensure them a happy and fulfilled life.
This announcement was made during a visit by the governor to hospitals to comfort the wounded and sick in hospital, following the torrential rains that claimed the lives of more than 430 people in the province of South Kivu. Despite this dramatic assessment, the governor noted that the state of health of the injured is under control, and that the medical care is effective.
The governor’s gesture, although symbolic, is to be welcomed. Indeed, in the DRC, the issue of child protection is still topical. Children are the first victims of armed conflicts, lack of infrastructure and health care, poverty, and many other scourges. In this difficult context, the mobilization and involvement of all stakeholders is essential for the protection of children and their development.
Let’s hope that the Governor’s example inspires other leaders and citizens to adopt a gesture of solidarity and compassion towards the most vulnerable in our society.
