“Postponement of the opposition march in the DRC: the reasons and the issues”

The postponement of the march of the political opposition in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The general secretariats of the opposition political parties, Ensemble de Katumbi, Ecide de Fayulu, Envol de Sesanga, and LDG de Matata have officially informed the governor of the city of Kinshasa of the new date of the peaceful march, initially scheduled for Saturday. May 13, but postponed to Saturday May 20. In this correspondence, the leaders of the opposition showed concern to preserve the peace and tranquility of the population by postponing this march.

This decision follows the postponement decided by the city hall of Kinshasa, having fixed the march for Thursday, May 18. This demonstration aims to fight against the high cost of living, misery and the fragile security situation in the east of the country. It will take place in the presence of many citizens who want to express their disagreement with the current policy of the Congolese government.

However, some political opposition leaders have chosen to organize their own march on May 13, despite the prohibition of the governor of the city of Kinshasa. This initiative caused great tension, as the police intervened to prevent the demonstration and arrest several participants.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently facing various socio-economic and security crises, resulting in numerous demonstrations and popular mobilizations. Some of the main concerns of the Congolese population include: soaring food and gasoline prices, insecurity in some areas of the country, as well as uncertainties about the electoral process scheduled for 2023.

Despite tensions and opposition, the Congolese people are resilient and continue to mobilize to make their voices heard and defend their rights.
