Title: DRC: the opposition postpones its march against the high cost of living and the chaotic electoral process
This Friday, May 12, 2023, Delly Sesanga, leader of the Congolese opposition, announced at a press conference the postponement of the march scheduled for next Saturday, May 20 in Kinshasa.
Initially scheduled for the same day as the women’s march in Goma for the international day of struggle for women’s health, this demonstration aimed to denounce the high cost of living and the chaotic electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to Delly Sesanga, the opposition leaders have decided to postpone their march to avoid falling into the trap of the government which would seek to provoke incidents to justify a possible failure of the opposition demonstration. They also refused the date set by the governor of Kinshasa, to allow him to better prepare himself on the security level.
The general secretaries of Écidé, Envol, Ensemble pour la République and LGD (Leadership and governance for development) will go to the town hall today to communicate the new date to the provincial governor, who will have to accept that this and not impose it.
Despite this postponement, Delly Sesanga and the other opposition leaders have invited the population of Kinshasa to participate massively in this peaceful demonstration in favor of the Congolese population, which is bearing the brunt of the current economic crisis.
Among the demands of the opposition, the establishment of a transparent and fair electoral process as well as a reduction in the cost of daily living would be at the top of the list.
Despite this postponement, the Congolese opposition does not let go and remains mobilized to denounce the difficult living conditions of the Congolese population and call for profound changes for the future of their country.
