Red Cross of North Kivu province: 18,000 volunteer first aiders to respond to complex humanitarian situations

The Red Cross of the province of North Kivu celebrated the international day of this movement by registering to date 18,000 volunteer first aiders to respond to the complex humanitarian situations in the region. Marcel Mwamba Kalala, the provincial president, stressed that one of the principles of this humanitarian organization is “neutrality and impartiality”. In a difficult context, the Red Cross carried out sanitation and decontamination work in two main markets in Goma, Virunga and Alanine, to provide some relief to the population. Since 2019, the organization has been carrying out “the fight against cholera project supported by UNICEF” in addition to “the distribution of non-food items and drinking water in the sites of displaced people in Bulengo, Kanyaruchinya, Nyiragongo with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC”.

Thus, the Red Cross of this province undermined by conflicts and epidemics strives to respond to emergency situations by working with various international organizations. This international day is an opportunity to recall the importance of solidarity and cooperation to overcome humanitarian crises in the DRC.
