The phenomenon of street children, commonly known as “Shegués”, has become a major concern in Kinshasa. They steal, beg and create a feeling of insecurity among the inhabitants. After a recent incident, where a thief was captured by the population, there is an urgent need to find effective solutions to this problem. Beyond repression, it is essential to understand the root causes that push them to live on the streets. Social, educational and economic measures are needed to reintegrate them into society. Raising public awareness is also crucial to promote empathy and solidarity towards these vulnerable children. Collective action by authorities, associations and the population is needed to create a safer environment and offer better prospects for the future of street children in Kinshasa.
