**Chad Elections: Towards a Democracy in Search of Legitimacy**
On January 21, 2024, the Chadian Constitutional Council validated the results of the legislative elections of December 29, 2023, confirming the dominance of the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS) with 124 seats out of 188. However, this victory raises alarming questions about the state of democracy in the country. The high abstention rate and accusations of fraud launched by the opposition, illustrated by the malaise of the RNDT-Le Réveil, reveal major gaps in electoral transparency. The situation echoes other crises of legitimacy in Africa, such as that of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through disconcerting figures – one appeal out of 243 upheld – the ability of the judicial system to restore confidence is undermined. As Chad finds itself at a crossroads, the country’s democratic future depends on sincere dialogue and recognition of citizens’ voices, in order to go beyond the simple slogan of a suffering democracy.
