Since Monday April 15, Kinshasa has celebrated the inauguration of the very first market gardeners’ market named “Assiette du peuple”. This significant event was honored by the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, José Mpanda Kabangu, who emphasized the crucial role of this initiative for producers and local consumers.
Established through a partnership between the Congolese Government and the FAO, “Assiette du peuple” aims to provide market gardeners in the Kinshasa hinterland with a dedicated platform for selling their fresh produce. This market stands as a crucial leap towards regional food self-sufficiency, placing emphasis on the promotion of local production and the support of small-scale farmers.
One remarkable feature of this market is the inclusion of a positive cold room, an essential asset for preserving unsold products and enhancing profitability for market gardeners. Its planned opening on Sundays and public holidays was strategically scheduled to not conflict with administrative activities, allowing for optimal organization of the space.
The construction of this infrastructure was entrusted to the dynamic company Cogen Conception, which successfully rose to the challenge and brought to life this valuable asset for the community. Minister Mpanda’s announcement of similar markets in all twenty-three other communes of Kinshasa promises a comprehensive network to address the food requirements of the local population.
This project signifies a significant advancement in promoting local agriculture, fostering the circular economy, and encouraging responsible consumption. By providing market gardeners with a suitable sales platform, this market contributes to reinforcing food security and raising awareness among consumers about supporting local producers. It is a promising initiative for a more sustainable and united future for Kinshasa.
In conclusion, the “Assiette du peuple” market gardener market embodies an innovative vision that places local agriculture at the core of sustainable development concerns. By offering a dedicated platform for actors in the agricultural sector, this market sets the stage for more responsible and committed consumption, promoting a virtuous circle for the Kinshasa community. It beautifully showcases the fusion of tradition and modernity in fostering healthy and sustainable food for all.
