The ongoing electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo has recently been the focus of discussions and deliberations as the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) has made significant adjustments to the elections calendar for senators, governors, and vice-governors. The modifications come in light of logistical and financial challenges that have hindered the smooth organization of these eagerly anticipated elections.
The CENI has officially scheduled April 29, 2024, as the date for conducting these pivotal elections, with the compilation and dissemination of outcomes set to take place simultaneously. However, it is crucial to note that the provinces of Kwilu and Nord-Ubangi will need to await the resumption of national and provincial legislative elections in specific constituencies before proceeding with their respective elections.
In addition, the Electoral Commission has confirmed the reception of rulings from the Constitutional Court and Courts of Appeal regarding appeals contesting candidacies for senatorial, gubernatorial, and vice-gubernatorial positions. These decisions ascertain the validity of applications and define the course of action regarding raised challenges.
Concerning the senatorial elections, the Constitutional Court reviewed seven petitions, deeming five inadmissible and two admissible yet unfounded. As for the elections of provincial governors and vice-governors, the Courts of Appeal scrutinized a total of 25 requests, ruling 12 as inadmissible, 7 as admissible but unfounded, and 6 as admissible and founded.
This rescheduled electoral timetable aims to ensure the transparency, legitimacy, and inclusivity of the impending elections, while upholding democratic principles and the will of the Congolese populace.
